Online education

They say that free online educational courses is the future of education. I am not sure about that and I do not completely agree, because I strongly believe in the "lesson" that the relationship between the student and the teacher can give you - and this is irreplaceable. However, we have to follow the new tendencies of the world and use the new technologies cleverly for the good of the human life and environment.

During my 1st year of studies, I had many questions into me about my choice to study Physical Therapy. Why Physical Therapy? Why not Medicine? What is the difference? Is Physical Therapy really useful? Does it really have an effect? Why am I educated this way? How should a proper Physical Therapy curriculum be built? What should be the subjects presented and the way they should be presented by the lecturers?

So, I decided to put all of these thoughts on a piece of paper and start a small research. The results of this research are presented in this presentation.

I am not suggesting something specific or something that is 100% correct. I just believe that there must be a continuous on how such educational programs should be built based on research and scientific knowledge.

This is what I tried to do and open the space for discussion. Because I really believe in the strength and quality of the University's curriculum, how this is presented by the lecturers and the effect this has on the Physical Therapy student.

"Physiotherapy is a dynamic health care profession with foundations in theory and research and specialized clinical expertise. Each of the 14 Canadian Universities offering physiotherapy education provide a professional, entry-level program and as of 2012 all will be at the Master's level. Within each of these programs, the curriculum is presented in a course-based Master's format. Ten programs are offered in English and 4 in French. Physiotherapy is a regulated profession meaning an active license or practice permit, from the provincial regulatory organization, is required. Successful completion of an accredited entry-level program allows the graduate to sit the national Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE). For most provinces, successful completion of the PCE is required for registration. Clinical Master's and/or thesis-based Master's and Doctorate programs are offered by most of the 14 Universities with entry-level programs. These are typically designed for physiotherapy and other healthcare clinicians wanting to pursue further academic education and generally follow a more traditional graduate education format. Physiotherapy specific and interdisciplinary post-graduate certifications and advanced practice courses are also available at many universities".

European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education

WHAT IS ENPHE?

The aim of the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education is to bring together and enhance collaboration between European Institutes and physiotherapy educational institutions in the European region in order to:

1. provide a forum for interaction and exchange of educational developments;
2. promote the convergence of physiotherapy educational programmes;
3. stimulate the development of a European dimension in physiotherapy educational curricula;
4. facilitate mobility of staff and students between physiotherapy educational institutions;
5. encourage and support standards of high quality education in physiotherapy in accordance with the recommendations of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT);
6. advance the body of knowledge of physiotherapy;
7. facilitate collaborative research projects between physiotherapy educational institutions;

Education Policy Statement 

Introduction 

The Executive Committee is pleased to present a revised version of the Education Policy  Statement, prepared by the Education Working Group of the European Region of the WCPT,  taking into consideration the Leuven Communiqué, April 2009.

The purpose of this statement is to provide information to physiotherapists, educators and the appropriate authorities and institutions within the European Union on the principles that underpin programmes of physiotherapy education. These principles cover undergraduate education and the continuum of life-long learning opportunities including higher degrees. 

Central to the statement are the revised WCPT declaration of principle and position statements on Education, the Bologna principles and the direction of the Bologna reforms.  

The Education Policy Statement seeks to ensure excellence in all aspects and levels of education by advocating quality assurance mechanisms. In addition it seeks to inform the work of the European Region in seeking to achieve a European Common Platform by highlighting the need for transparent pathways and  equity in access to physiotherapy education programmes at all levels. The statement aims to provide confidence to the public and to public bodies and the wider higher education sectors promoting the International standing of Physiotherapy Education in Europe.

Master in Human Movement Sciences: Sport, Exercise & Health

Application and admission (for foreign students)

Entry requirements

To gain admission to the Master’s Programme Human Movement Sciences you must have a Bachelor of Science degree which includes basic knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Psychology on the level of "Introductory textbooks" as well as sufficient research skills and knowledge of Mathematics and Physics. You must also have a good command of English as a working language (TOEFL 580 or IELTS 6,5).

Admission procedure

If you have a Bachelor’s degree and meet all the admission criteria, you can send information to the Admission board of the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences, who will decide if you are indeed admissible.

Residents from countries other than the Netherlands (both within and outside the European Economic Area) have to apply for admission by April 1, 2013. Students who want to be admitted into the Master's programme can apply by filling in the appropriate forms and sending them in together with the required documents.
